There are at least two members of ∆ (pronounced Alt-j) they came together whilst they were studying their 2nd year at Leeds university in 2008.

A small set was quickly developed using these and newly-written songs, and the band began to build a modest reputation through some crammed gigs in their front room. A name change followed (the band was previously known as FILMS) and they recorded their first EP, at Universal in London with producer Charlie Andrew in his Shoreditch studio. To date ∆ have headlined such venues as The Faversham, The HiFi Club and The Brudenell Social Club in Leeds, as well as playing gigs in Manchester (including supporting Das Racist on the opening date of their first UK tour), Middlesbrough, Liverpool and London. Their music, which they uncertainly label (for want of a better name) jump- or trip-folk, has, in their words, a pert and merciless sound. The sound is pushed and pulled, borrowing and wedging various lo-fi, hip hop and folky pockets to make a haunting and original mulch.
