Every great Australian song on one set of albums? I'd like to see that....

"The idea came to me when we filled the MCG full of Australian music fans at the Mushroom 25th Anniversary concert. All those people there, just for Australian music!

We embarked on the mammoth task of collecting the ultimate list of everyone's all time favourite Australian hits. We asked the fans through the Austereo radio network. We asked the radio programmers around the country. We asked the industry heavyweights and most importantly the performers themselves. Then the list of Australian Ultimate Songs became an integral part of the Year 2000 celebrations in a national simulcast by the Seven Network and the Austereo Network.

It was too great a list, with too much fabulous Australian music not to release on record. So several months later the AUS Box is born - 6 1/2 hours of the best Australian music ever! In the very early years a lot of great Australian music never made it on record, but we've made up for that since.

Australian performers have a character of their own, and collectively our tastes are different. We love larrikins and eccentrics, which is why we've produced and loved bands like Skyhooks and Split Enz. We love artists with balls. It's when you compile Australian music together like this that you notice just unique it is.

Australian music has come along way since Johnny O'Keefe had to trick his way into a recording contract. We've seen Savage Garden with number one singles and albums all over the world. Nick Cave is as legendary everywhere as he is in Australia and silverchair sell millions of albums around the globe, constantly traveling to new and established markets.

Australian music just keeps evolving and continually proving how good it is against the very best the world has to offer. "
