A lot of water has passed under the bridge since The Temper Trap's delay soaked opening to 'Sweet Disposition' first began causing a stir on Australian radio late last year. The track was the first taster of their recording sessions with UK producer Jim Abbiss (UNKLE, Arctic Monkeys, Adele) and it clearly made the world sit up and take notice. The track instantly won the band a steady stream of influential fans around the globe. Following much lauded dates in the UK and US last November, the band's star rose quickly winning coveted spots on BBC, NME & X-FM '09 tip lists, rotation from influential BBC hosts Zane Lowe and Steve Lamacq, as well as recording a stunning four track live session for the BBC's Introducing series.
The new year only saw the momentum gather pace. They signed a worldwide record deal (ex ANZ & Nth America) with Korda Marshall's newly re-launched Infectious Records (previously home to Muse, Ash & Garbage), scored a trailer and film placement for Sundance buzz US film '500 Days of Summer' and continued glowing reviews on blog sites stretching from Melbourne to London and New York to Madrid.
Now seems a pertinent time to focus in the reason were all here in the first place - the music, the songs, the voice, and more specifically this Melbourne born, now London bound acts' long awaited debut album Conditions. Completed in early March in a final London session with Abbiss, following a previous 4 week stint at Melbourne's Sing Sing Studios, the debut album is unquestionably set to deliver upon the immense promise created by acclaimed singles 'Science of Fear' and 'Sweet Disposition'.
The monumental 'Science of Fear' is the band's debut UK single and is already registering spins on Radio 1 and massive support from JJJ in Australia. This eye of the perfect musical storm may contrast markedly with the hypnotic and gliding melodic spell of 'Sweet Disposition' but is equally a watershed mark for the band and further confirmation of their refusal to be stymied by genre, expectation or any such ties that bind so many others.
Conditions is a collection of songs equally ambitious as bold and crucially in the modern era, each song truly demands shared billing. From the soaring 'Down River', resplendent with strings, horns & choirs to the spine- tingling 'Soldier On', the tribal percussive beat of live favourite 'Drum Song' and transcendent 'Love Lost', which somehow wields the common ground between neo-soul and wide-screen alternative rock.
Therein, lies the essence, and prime appeal of the band. Blessed with stunning, unworldly vox of Dougy and a cast of highly talented players schooled in influences that absorb rock legends, indie and hip hop pioneers, drum n bass, R &B and almost anything in between they are literally a band that sound like nothing you've heard before.
The Temper Trap has relocated to London in April and have commenced a journey that one suspects is well and truly just beginning.
