Husky
Forever So
Forever So is a rich and layered collection of songs, recorded in a rustic Northcote bungalow and mixed in Los Angeles at House of Blues Studios with Noah Georgeson (Joanna Newsom, Devendra Banhart, the Strokes).
Lead singer and guitarist Husky Gawenda and cousin Gideon Preiss, (keyboards, vocals), pulled together all the old recording gear they could get their hands on and set up for the summer in Gawenda’s house. Spending the long days and warm nights arranging and piecing together a collection of songs written by Gawenda, they refused to settle for anything but the most spirited performances and tirelessly searched for the right piano line or sweetest harmony. This would become Husky’s definitive opus, Forever So.
Husky and Gideon recalled the sound of the records they grew up listening to together, those of their parents’ record collection encompassing Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, The Doors, Fairport Convention and Joni Mitchell. Recording technique was not important. All that mattered was the song, the moment, the music and the joy of creating something they had long dreamt of creating.
Forever So is an album that holds its own amongst the records that inspired them. Warm and plaintive pianos are driven by urgent rolling drums, while acoustic guitars sweep in and out of haunting harmonies, all woven together by melodies and voices that resonate like some long ago, vanishing summertime.
From the prayer like Dark Sea, a tale of two friends growing up, to the swirling, fairytale quality of The Woods, with Husky’s pure and unabashed falsetto, to the memory-laden dream journey of Hunter, in which Husky’s voice is alternatively sweet and pure and urgently down deep and powerful, Forever So is an example of the great things happening in the Australian music scene today.
Husky won Triple J Unearthed to play the Push Over Festival and both History’s Door & Dark Sea have been on rotation on Triple J and FBI radio as well as doing the rounds on community radio nationally. The band have been touring the country with their own shows as well as supporting the likes of Devendra Banhart, Noah and the Whale and Kimbra. Many have fallen in love with History’s Door and the album has become one of the much anticipated albums of the year. It won’t disappoint!
