Kasey Chambers
Luka
One of the darkest songs to ever scale the pop charts, Suzanne Vega's 'Luka' has been a personal favourite of Kasey Chambers ever since she first heard it on release in 1987.
As one critic wrote at the time, the song 'seems beautiful and serene while discussing something terrible and devastating.' It was that contrast that also drew Kasey in.
'I remember when Luka was on the radio, I heard it and fell in love with it, but wasn't sure why. It's a soft-sounding beautiful song with such a hard-hitting theme, child abuse. To bring those vastly different elements together in a song is something that's always amazed me about Luka.'
Luka is the first single to be lifted from Storybook, a collection of Kasey's personal favourites, duets and influences, an album that reveals yet another side of the hugely talented, multi-award-winning Ms Chambers. Mind you, Luka wasn't an easy song to cover, especially for a proud mother of two, with a third child well on the way.
Kasey admits the experience of cutting the song and making a video was 'emotionally draining. And being pregnant does make me even more emotional. It's pretty full-on, very hard-hitting.'
